When I saw the ad a couple weeks ago for A Hawk and A Hacksaw I smiled at the name. When I saw that it was described as "Eastern European Folk" I thought of something like Gogol Bordello or Devotchka and I got interested. When I read today's Seattle Weekly review of AHAAH ... :-) ... I decided to go to the show. I have a hard time with shows that don't kick off till 9pm on a weeknight and have multiple opening acts. I know I am going to be hurting the next day. But ... I think this show is going to be special.
AHAAH is, at its heart, serious Eastern European, klezmer, and gypsy folk by New Mexican musicians Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost. The most recent EP A Hawk and a Hacksaw and the Hun Hangar Ensemble is, as the name suggests, a collaboration between AHAAH and the HHE, a group of Hungarian folk musicians. The EP is entirely instrumental and intermixes original compositions and arrangements of traditional works. It's kind of unclear whether the HHE will be at the show.
Opening for AHAAH are Laura Gibson and Benjamin Wetherill.
